Become a digital nomad

Ditch the desk and make the most of life as a remote worker

What is a digital nomad?

Digital nomads are otherwise known as remote or independent workers, who are location-free. They can live and work from anywhere in the world.

As long as there is an available and stable internet connection, digital nomads can carry out their work. So many use co-working spaces or their own home, while others work from coffee shops or internet cafes.

Not limited to any specific age group or profession, the number of digital nomads across the world is rapidly increasing.

Where can I become a digital nomad?

Become a digital nomad in Portugal

Thousands of people have relocated to Portugal for it’s stunning scenery and idyllic work/life balance. So many of these are of course, digital nomads. Portugal’s digital nomad visa has achieved a reputation as one of Europe’s top visas for nomads due to what it has to offer.

There are a couple of options for becoming a digital nomad in Portugal; either applying for a short stay visa for up to one year, or applying for a residency permit which can be renewed for up to five years.

As a digital nomad in Portugal, you can benefit from the Non-Habitual Residency program – otherwise known as the NHR. With this, you won’t have any tax to pay on foreign income, and if you register as a freelancer in Portugal, you’ll only pay 20% tax on income earned in Portugal (compared to the standard 48%) and won’t have to pay social security for the first 12-months.

Don’t forget – you’ll have to spend a minimum of 183-days in Portugal to keep hold of your visa.

Who can apply?

To be eligible for the digital nomad visa, you must:

  • Be 18+
  • Earn a minimum of €3040 per month
  • Have international clients
  • Provide evidence of health insurance
  • & more

Aside from the beautiful beaches, parks and lifestyle Cyprus has to offer; the country is an up and coming technology hub with attractive tax benefits for expats.

Valid for 12-months, holders of the visa can apply for a renewal to extend for another year.

As a digital nomad in Cyprus, you will be exempt from paying taxes until your 183rd day. After this point, you will be considered a tax resident and will have to begin paying taxes in the country. Personal tax rates vary from 0% to 35% depending on how much you earn.

To ensure you can remain a digital nomad in Cyprus, you will have to spend a minimum of 183-days of the year in Cyprus.
