Are you eligible for the

Malta Retirement Programme?

To benefit from the MRP, you need to meet the following criteria:

Nationality

This programme is open to retirees from the EU, EEA, Switzerland, and select third-country nationals (excluding Maltese citizens).

Primary Income Source

A pension must constitute at least 75% of your income.

Relocation to Malta

You must reside predominantly in Malta.

Property in Malta

Purchase or rent property with a minimum value of - owned property: €275,000 or
rented property: €9,600 annually (€8,750 in Gozo or the south of Malta).

Health Insurance

Proof of comprehensive health insurance is required.

Fit and Proper Test

Applicants must pass Malta’s Fit and Proper Test.

What are the tax obligations

under the MRP?

The Malta Retirement Programme offers unparalleled tax benefits for retirees, making it a standout option for those seeking tax-efficient living. Overall, the MRP offers retirees: 

Flat 15% Tax on Pensions

Global pension income remitted to Malta will be taxed at a competitive flat rate of 15%. 

Minimum Tax Payable

The minimum annual tax is €7,500 for the beneficiary, accompanied by an additional €500 per dependent.

No Tax on Foreign Income Not Remitted to Malta

Any foreign income or capital gains not brought into Malta will not be subject to Maltese tax. 

Moreover, there is no tax on capital gains or inheritance for those who establish residency under the MRP. This means you can enjoy your retirement savings without worrying about hefty taxes eating into your funds.

However, it’s important to note that if you have any local Maltese source income, such as rental income from property in Malta, that will be taxed at the normal rates up to a maximum of 35%. It’s also crucial to keep thorough records and declare all sources of income to the Maltese tax authorities.
