What Steps are Needed to Obtain Portuguese Citizenship?

There are different paths to becoming a Portuguese citizen. The first step is to understand the different routes available, as the right one for you will depend upon your background and circumstances.

01. Via Marriage

If you have been married to – or you are in a civil partnership with – a Portuguese citizen for the previous three years or more, you are eligible to apply for Portuguese citizenship. There is no minimum residency requirement for this route.

02. By Descent

You can acquire Portuguese citizenship if you have at least one Portuguese parent or, grandparent. This option requires official documentation, such as your parents or grandparents birth certificates, to prove your direct lineage.

03. Naturalisation

To obtain Portuguese citizenship via naturalisation, you need to have been a legal Portuguese resident for at least 10-years. You’re also required to have basic Portuguese language proficiency and a clean criminal record.

04. Investment

The Golden Visa provides a popular, indirect pathway to citizenship. To qualify, you must make a qualifying investment. One advantage is the minimal stay requirement; just 7-days in the first year. After the mandatory residency period, you’re eligible to apply for citizenship.

FAQs

Do I need to take a language test?

If you are applying via naturalisation, you must demonstrate proficiency in the Portuguese language at an A2 level. This is typically achieved by passing the Certificate of Portuguese as a Foreign Language (CIPLE) exam. Applicants from Portuguese-speaking countries, or those applying through marriage with sufficient proof of community connection, may be exempt from this requirement.

What are the required documents needed?

While specific requirements vary depending on your chosen pathway, a standard application generally requires:

  • Valid passport or official identification document
  • Clean criminal record certificate from your home country; and any country where you have previously resided
  • Proof of legal residency in Portugal (if applying via naturalisation)
  • Official certification proving basic Portuguese language proficiency

What is the processing time for applying for Portuguese Citizenship?

Processing times for Portuguese citizenship vary, depending on the application route. Applications based on descent from a parent are typically prioritised and may be processed within 12 months. In contrast, applications through naturalisation, or descent from a grandparent, generally take two to five years to complete.

Dual Citizenship in Portugal

Portugal legally permits dual citizenship. This means you are not required by Portuguese law to renounce your original nationality when you become a Portuguese citizen. You can retain your current passport while simultaneously enjoying the rights and protections of an EU citizen.

Obtaining a Portuguese Passport

Once your citizenship is officially granted, you are eligible to apply for a Portuguese passport. You can do this by visiting a local citizen’s shop (Loja do Cidadão) in Portugal or your nearest Portuguese consulate abroad. You will need to provide your new Portuguese citizen’s card, recent colour photographs, and the required application fee.
