The Portuguese immigration landscape has undergone significant changes with the establishment of AIMA (Agência para a Integração, Migrações e Asilo), replacing the former SEF. If you’re a foreign resident in Portugal, understanding the new residence permit renewal process is crucial for maintaining your legal status in the country.

This comprehensive guide covers everything you need to know about renewing your Portugal residence permit in 2025, including critical deadlines, updated procedures, and essential travel information for those with expired documents.

Understanding Portugal Residence Permit Renewal under AIMA

AIMA is now the official authority responsible for issuing and renewing residence permits in Portugal. A residence permit (autorização de residência) allows foreign citizens to legally reside in Portugal and must be renewed periodically, whether temporary or permanent.

The renewal process has been updated with new digital systems, but understanding the specific requirements and deadlines is essential for a smooth experience.

AIMA Residency Renewal

Residence Permits expiring before 30 June 2025

If your Portugal residence permit expired before 30 June 2025, you’re part of a priority notification system. Here’s what you need to know:

Automatic notification process

The AIMA mission structure is actively notifying holders of expired residence permits via email. These notifications contain:

  • Instructions for renewal procedures
  • Required documentation lists
  • Specific deadlines for your case

Required actions

Once you receive your notification email:

  1. Respond promptly to the email instructions
  2. Gather required documents as specified in your notification
  3. Follow the designated renewal pathway outlined for your specific case
  4. Monitor your email regularly for updates from AIMA

Document validity extension

All residence permits originally set to expire on 30 June 2025, have been officially extended until 15 October 2025. This temporary measure provides protection while the renewal system processes applications.

Residence Permits expiring after 30 June 2025

For residents whose permits expired after 30 June 2025, a dedicated online renewal portal is available.

Online renewal

Residents with permits expiring in July can utilise the AIMA Renewals Portal for convenient online processing.

How to use the online portal

  1. Access the portal using the official AIMA renewals website
  2. Create an account or log in with existing credentials
  3. Complete the renewal application with accurate information
  4. Upload required documents in the specified formats
  5. Submit your application and retain confirmation details
  6. Track your application status through the portal

In-Person appointments

If you have a scheduled in-person appointment at a Registration Service:

  • Attend your appointment on the designated date and time
  • Bring all required documents as specified in your appointment confirmation
  • Contact the service to cancel if you cannot attend, allowing others to use the slot

Important travel information for expired Residence Permits

Understanding travel restrictions and document validity is crucial for residents with expired permits.

Document validity until October 2025

Portuguese residence documents initially valid until 30 June 2025 are now extended and will remain valid until 15 October 2025. This extension applies to:

  • Expired residence permits
  • Temporary residence authorisations
  • Long-term visas
  • Related immigration documents

Travel considerations

While your expired residence permit remains legally valid in Portugal, consider these factors when planning travel:

  • Check destination country requirements – some countries may not recognise the validity extension
  • Carry supporting documentation – bring official AIMA communications confirming validity
  • Allow extra time at border controls for potential questioning
  • Consider requesting a formal letter from a lawyer to clarify the situation – RHJ Law can assist you with this

Dear RHJ, thank you for the info provided on your website. I would like to know more about a”Term of Responsibility”, and if that can successfully eliminate both the burden of providing a suitable lease agreement and financial stability? I moved to Portugal under family D7, but I am now experiencing severe parental alienation of my daughter, a mental health/personality disorder issue of my wife, and do not have access to the same lease or passive income, to fulfill the needs of the visa renewal.
I greatly appreciate any insight or guidance, during this incredibly difficult time.
    Thank you sincerely,
    Karl Kaderli

    Hi,

Is it okay to travel on October in Korea or Japan then return on November 1 week before my card expires? My card will expires on Dec 8, so their will be no complication upon entering back to Portugal as long as my card is still valid, right?
