How do I start relocating my belongings?

There are many options when it comes to sending your belongings to Portugal, including land, sea, and air freight. While arranging this can feel like a daunting task, it doesn’t have to be, especially with this handy guide that provides all the information you need.

Land freight is typically the most affordable option for heavy or fragile items because you pack your belongings and ship them directly from where you live into Lisbon. You’ll also need a lot of time—around six weeks at minimum—to make arrangements before shipping your items.

Sea freight is often more expensive than land but may provide a faster delivery time if you need an item in less than two weeks.

Of all three options air-freight is the most expensive but also the quickest. If you fly at the same time you can meet your belongings on the other side.

What Types of Goods Can I Ship Through These Methods?

Obviously there are different rules on what you can and can’t ship by using different methods. Here are some examples below:

  • Land: This is the cheapest option, but can take the longest. It will be sent by truck or train and is typically cheaper for lighter goods. This could be boxes including your kitchen ware such as plates and cutlery.
  • Sea: This option is more expensive but offers a quicker delivery time. Sea freight includes international container shipping and seaborne cargo and can carry heavier goods. This may be the option for you if you are wanting to move with your car, bed or sofa.
  • Air: The fastest way to ship goods is through air freight, which can get them to their destination quickly at an increased cost of both money and fuel. However, can only take light items without becoming too expensive. This might be the way for you if you’re wanting to move with lots of clothes of bedding and blankets.

How Long Will Shipping Take?

Shipping time will vary depending on the method you choose. Land freight can take anywhere from 10 days to six weeks, while air freight can take anywhere from five days to one week. Shipments of furniture and larger items will usually require sea freight, which could take between seven and fourteen days, depending on the size of the shipment and what part of the world it’s headed for. These are some things to bear in mind when choosing your method of shipment.

Another thing to think about is how might you get your belongings to the border? If you are sending a crate with a car or large furniture in, then you will need to hire a truck that can move it. Whereas if you are only moving a couple of boxes to the airport then you may be able to squeeze them into a car.

Are there any alternatives to relocating my belongings?

If you can’t relocate your belongings, the next best option is to store them. This can be done through either a self-storage unit or renting out space at a warehouse. There are some things you’ll want to consider before doing so, including how long you plan on storing it, whether or not you want climate control, and if there’s anything that needs special handling. This allows you to get settled in in your new home in Portugal before arranging how and if you want to move your belongings.
